In Control or Losing Control?
Who is in control? Is it you or your fear of losing control? Is control keeping you restricted or opening you and your loved ones up to possibility?
You can look at this from more than one side. If you are in control of a situation you can remain comfortable and can be quite successful in anticipating and reacting to situations. You can also feel anguish from holding back and miss out on opportunities and gifts from within yourself and others.
The one thing that you truly have control over is yourself and there is a blessing in this. When you think for yourself, decide for yourself and act for yourself, you are liberated to design your life. Each person has always had this control and those who have used it to open up have truly been able to lead their own paths and discover many possibilities. They have inspired themselves and others. This is why your actions speak louder than your words and why modeling is so effective when leading.
How is control present in your life? Do you try to control yourself, other people and other situations? If you bring this topic into your awareness you may be able to identify some areas and notice how they are working for you.
In the area of controlling yourself notice if you are listening to yourself or telling yourself. You might be trying to control what you say, what you eat, your schedule or any other area. How do you feel in these situations? Is this control bringing you freedom or restriction?
When you look at how you try to control others are you left feeling disappointed because you can never truly do this? If you have been given control, think about the areas and circumstances. Do you try to maintain control for you or for them?
You may try to control your children because you feel it will help them learn or grow, you may try to control your family to maintain harmony in your home, and you may try to control colleagues to get your ideas heard. Is this nobility or is it placing your worth above theirs? What have you experienced that makes you want to use control? Often times it is because you don’t know yourself or are uncertain about the rules of navigating life.
I invite you to become aware of control in your life:
• Identify what you are trying to control,
• Identify why you want control,
• Identify how you feel.
• PLAY with giving up some control, trusting yourself or someone else and see what happens.
As you become more accepting of yourself and trust yourself you will have more control in your life without having to take control. If you allow this trust to carry over into your interactions with other people and other situations, you may find that you are being the model for them to trust themselves and step away from their own fears and into their own highest version of themselves.
