September 8, 2015 Creating Ease on the 1st Day of School

I have often pondered how much to interfere in the class placements, when I should be advocating for my children and at which point I should allow them to learn to advocate for themselves. I don’t think the answer is black and white but this morning I had a much more peaceful feeling not having to make any decisions for my children but allowing them to have the first day of school be their own experience. This has often been quite difficult for me.
I have a child who experiences anxiety and attending school has been an issue for him. It took me many years to get into a place where I can accept that the first day may be smooth and it may be difficult. Either option will give my child a learning experience that will help them to know what kind of life they want to create. Even though my son is still not thrilled about going to school he is able to enjoy the experience of not wanting summer to end with all his friends.
In allowing my children their own experiences, I created a feeling of ease around this day that has often been full of angst. This is the kind of life that I want for my family.
